Clowning isn’t only to be funny. It gives you permission to be silly, yes, but it also gives you a platform for so much more. Here is a simple dialogue between Boofa and an almost five-year-old boy about to get his face painted:
Boofa: Hi! What’s your name?
Kid: Justin.
Justin’s mom begins to cry. She then shared with me that Justin is autistic, and I (Boofa) was the first person he had EVER responded to.
I don’t know why he responded to me, but I will remember that moment forever. It’s moments like these that make me feel so strongly about what I do! As Autism Awareness Month comes to a close, I hope we all learn a little bit more about this condition.
I am so grateful for meeting my buddy Justin!
